The Sherlockian podcast world

Don't worry I'm not going to start a podcast !!

Sometimes at a scion meeting I'll mention a Sherlockian podcast I listen to, and I'm surprised that some others haven't heard of them. So I wanted to put together a list of the Sherlockian podcasts I listen to, or am aware of, as a resource for those looking for tings to listen to. Of course, we are all busy and there are times when I have to skip episodes. Diving into the podcast world can be even more overwhelming if (like me) you need to listen to things 'in order' and go through podcasts from the beginning in order, it can be overwhelming.

And so, here is a list of podcasts I'm aware of, and what each podcast covers. Please let me know about others that could be added to the list. I have to admit there are some others I'm aware of but have not had a chance to listen to, or the are inactive. There are also a few sets of Youtube-based shows that would work out very well as podcssts - but don't use this audio format. I'll provide a roundup of those at some point in the future.

Podcasts are presented in no particular order, other than the order I see them on my podcast subscription list:

Source: ACD listening to radio with F.D. Waller

I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere - hosts: Scott Monty and Burt Wolder. OK I am listing this first because it was the very first Sherlockian podcast, and it's probably the most popular. IHOSE (www.ihearofsherlock.com) is a twice-monthly podcast out of the US, usually with a guest(s) interviewed on a timely topic such as a new Sherlockian book, event (conference), stage play, etc.. In the early years of this podcast, there was a 'news' section that highlighted upcoming events, and I wish this still existed. The tone is always upbeat and highly entertaining (with plenty of what I think we can lovingly call dad jokes). There's a competition at the back end of each podcast that gives an opportunity to win prizes. The website has extra blog posts, and excellent show notes for each podcast episode.

Doings of Doyle - hosts: Paul Chapman and Mark Jones. This monthly British podcast is not just Sherlockian, it is Doylean (www.doingsofdoyle.com) broadly covering the works of ACD. The typical episode covers an individual story (short story or novel) from ACD, and it's best to read that story prior to listening to the episode. The literary and historical detail provided is outstanding, thanks to the hosts' expertise and preparation -  and the show notes reflect this. There are also occasional episodes interviewing someone from the Doylean world - for example the Cottingley Fairies.

Trifles - hosts: Scott Monty and Burt Wolder. Trifles (www.sherlockholmespodcast.com) is a weekly podcast from the hosts of IHOSE that discusses.... well, the Trifles in the canon. There are of course many minor points for discussion, from food, to plants, to animals, to cars (to reference the most recent episode). It's truly remarkable to me that the pairing manage to identify a new topic each week, and I wouldn't blame them for paring back to a monthly podcast. As the team have consumed all the trifle(s), they've built in some wonderful concepts such as the 'master class' were they review and discuss an outstanding Sherlockian article, as a way to introduce the listeners to the variety present in Sherlockian literature.

The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast - hosts: Gus and Luke Holwerda. As the name suggests, this podcast deals with the Sherlock Holmes Granada series(sherlockpodcast.com), with each podcast dealing with a single episode of the show. The production quality is outstanding, as one might expect from two hosts whose day job is film-making. Listening in order, it's fun to listen to Gus and Luke slowly accept the Sherlockian concepts. As time has passed, the community has responded and Gus/Luke have connected with people involved in the Granada series, conducted interviews, and even visited and interviewed David Burke! Their enthusiasm has extended to a website of all Granada series filming locations, and the 'Sherlockian Relics' collections available for purchase that re-create props from the show!

The Baker Street Babes Podcast - hosts: well, errrr, there are many Babes that have contributed to this very popular all-female podcast - perhaps I'll shout out those I've heard the most: Lindsay Faye, Tamar Zeffren, and Maria Fleischhack. This podcast is not really active any more, but the back-episodes are wonderful to listen to. There has been one podcast in 2023 that was recorded at the BSI Weekend gathering in New York (on the 'Knights of Thorpe'). Topics cover not just the canon, but film and television, and the energy and levity of discussions are highly enjoyable. This is a great way for people who want to dip their toes into the Sherlockian world to learn more.

From Adler to Amberly (on Rippercast) - host: Karl Coppack. This British podcast is hosted by the Rippercast podcast (www.casebook.org/podcast , dedicated to Jack the Ripper and 'Ripperology'). The podcast dedicates an episode to each short story, addressing them in order of publication. The podcast will probably deal with the novels at some point in the future. One of the nice features of this podcast is that a guest joins Karl on each episode to discuss the stories, with some nice consistent structure.

However Improbable - hosts: Marisa and Sarah (never worked out their surnames!). This podcast (www.howeverimprobablepodcast.com) addresses each story one podcast at a time.... and here's the bold Sherlockian decision.... in chronological order! Whose order, I hear you ask? The podcast moved at a breathless pace, and then going into novels most recently. That means this wonderful podcast is queued up and ready for listening in chronological order.... well any chronological order you choose really :)

Watsonian Weekly - hosts: Brad Keefauver, with many contributors joining across episodes. Can a Watsonian podcast be Sherlockian? Of course it is (watsonianweekly.libsyn.com) ! This podcast is an extension of the wonderful John H Watson Society (www.johnhwatsonsociety.com) and brings a combination of discussion on a 'topic of the day', along with news on happenings in the Sherlockian world (such as meetings).

Is there room for more in the podcast world? Absolutely! We haven't seen a podcast covering the history of Sherlockian films, of the BBC Sherlock show, of Sherlockian radio series, and so many other topics.
